JUAN LUNA

Juan Luna y Novicro or also known as Juan Luna was a Filipino painter,sculptor and a political activist of the Philippine Revolution during the late 19th century. He became one of the first recognized Philippine artist. Juan Luna was born October 23,1857 and husband of a loving wife Maria de la paz  pardo de tavera.

Born in the town of Badoc,Ilocos Norte in the northern Philippines, Juan N. Luna was the third among the seven children of Joaquín Posadas Luna and Laureana Ancheta Novicio-Luna. In 1861, the Luna family moved to Manila and he went to Ateneo Municipal de Manila where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree. He excelled in painting and drawing, and was influenced by his brother, Manuel N. Luna, who, according to Filipino patriot José Rizal, was a better painter than Juan himself.

The Philippine history with masterpiece such as spolarium, The death of cleopatra and blood compact. Juan Luna was mostly known for his works being dramatic and dynamic,focusing on romanticism and realism styles of art.

It was 1881 when he received his first major achievement as an artist and this is through winning a silver medal. His work Spolarium won gold in 1884 and battle at lepanto in 1887. 

Juan Luna other popular work include The Happy Beauty and Blood Slave,Tampuhan, Mestiza Lady at her Dresser and Roman Ladies.

He died in 1899 at the age of 42 after he suffered from a heart attack. today, several of his works can be found in esteemed museums in the philippine such as the Lopez Museum and National Museum.

SPOLARIUM

The painting features a glimpse of Roman history centered on the bloody carnage brought by gladiatorial matches. Spoliarium is a Latin word referring to the basement of the Roman Colosseum where the fallen and dying gladiators are dumped and devoid of their worldly possessions.

Based on historical accounts, the young and brilliant Juan Luna had spent almost eight months of his fruitful life, to finally finish the historically significant Spoliarium. Lot of effort,love and sacrifices Juan Luna put to come up with this painting. however its a wonderful worth i!.
